Diagnose Windows Blue Screens

How many times has this happened to you?

Customer:  I got the Blue Screen of Death.
You:  Ok…  What does it say?
Customer:  I dunno… it’s blue.  It rebooted right after it blue screened.
You:  Ok…  Let’s see if we can track down the problem.  What did the BSOD say?
Customer:  Umm…  I think it said error.  It was just a blue screen full of technical mumbo jumbo…  I didn’t understand any of it.
You:  Have you made any changes recently?  Was anything acting strangely?
Customer:  No, it just blue screened. 

Upon investigation, you find a dump file (.dmp) but nothing useful in the Event Log other than the fact that the system had a blue screen and an unexpected shutdown.   So, how do you troubleshoot the problem?  Continue reading…

VMware Player and Group Policy Allow Log on Locally

Problem:  
You receive the following error message when trying to enter Unity on a guest virtual machine in VMware Player:   The virtual machine cannot enter Unity mode.  Check that Unity is supported for this guest operating system and that the latest version of VMware Tools is installed.
